Invest Ontario supported Magna’s six projects with $23.6 million in funding

BRAMPTON, Ontario, February 15, 2023 – Magna, one of the world’s largest suppliers in the automotive industry, announced today that it will expand its operations across six locations in Ontario with a $471 million investment, expected to create more than 1,000 new jobs by 2027.

The company’s expansion will strengthen its electric vehicle parts production to meet growing demand and increase local access for original equipment manufacturers OEMs), putting more electric vehicles (EVs) on roads.

This investment represents another tremendous show of confidence in the growing strength and resilience of our province’s auto sector. Together, with our industry partners, we’re putting Ontario back on the map as we build up Ontario’s electric vehicle supply chain from mining to manufacturing. The cars of the future and the batteries that power them will be built right here in Ontario, by Ontario workers.

Premier Doug Ford

Brampton will be home to a new 490,000 square-foot battery enclosures facility that will create hundreds of new jobs in Peel Region. The plant will support Ford Motor Company’s all-electric F-150 Lightning trucks and future OEM programs.

This game-changing investment by Magna will create hundreds of new jobs across the province, while further strengthening Ontario’s end-to-end automotive supply chain. We’re creating the right conditions for businesses to succeed and continue to work around the clock to attract new investments that build a stronger economy.

Vic Fedeli

Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade

Subject to reaching a definitive agreement, the Invest Ontario Fund will provide $23.6 million for the six projects. Magna’s increased capacity will accelerate the industry’s shift to electric vehicles, and support Ontario’s skilled auto workers.

Magna’s decision to expand in six locations across the province showcases Ontario’s advantages in automotive talent. By diversifying automotive parts manufacturing across the province, Magna’s investments will strengthen EV supply chains in Ontario.

The move to electrification is part of a broader Ontario automotive strategy to position the province as a North American leader in building the car of the future. The new projects will secure further investments in the sector, especially EV-related technologies, and increase exports of Ontario-made auto parts.

Magna’s roots in Ontario run deep, and we are excited about opening a new facility dedicated to a strategic electrification product. The Brampton facility, coupled with investment and growth in five existing Ontario facilities, allows Magna to keep up with customer demands across several product areas. We are excited to bring new business, more investment and additional jobs to Ontario.
