Siemens Canada establishes global R&D centre for battery production in Ontario

Invest Ontario supports R&D investment to strengthen province’s leadership in battery manufacturing
HANOVER, Germany, March 31, 2025 – Invest Ontario is supporting Siemens Canada’s $150 million investment to establish a Global AI Manufacturing Technologies R&D Center for Battery Production at its headquarters in Oakville, Ontario.
This R&D investment will create up to 90 highly skilled jobs and play an important role in cementing Ontario’s leadership in the battery manufacturing sector by fuelling innovation across the supply chain.
The new R&D centre, located initially at Siemens Canada’s head office in Oakville, will focus on developing cutting-edge AI manufacturing technologies with an initial emphasis on battery and EV production. It will leverage Siemens' expertise in AI, edge computing, machine vision, digital twins, and cybersecurity to drive innovation and efficiency in battery production.
The establishment of a Global AI Manufacturing Technologies R&D Center for Battery Production in Canada will help advance Canada’s national battery and EV ecosystem and will foster collaboration with higher education institutions and battery manufacturers to innovate production in the industry. With investment from Siemens and the support of the provincial and federal governments, this initiative will not only enhance Canada’s competitiveness in the global battery market but also contribute to the country’s economic growth.

The R&D project will be supported with a $7.2 million forgivable loan through the Invest Ontario Fund, subject to reaching a definitive agreement.
